About Magnetic Island

Only a 20 minute fast catamaran ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island is a beautiful and plentiful destination just waiting to be explored.
 
Magnetic Island is located within the Great Barrier Reef and is a contrasting landscape of pristine waters framed by rocky headlands, granite rocks and majestic hoop pines.
 
The island has 23 secluded beaches and bays which offer welcome relieve from the warm tropical weather with many spots ideal for snorkelling.
 
More than half of Magnetic Island consists of untouched national park making it a World Heritage listed destination, and offers 24km of scenic walking tracks.

 
The island, discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770, was given its name because he thought it gave off a strong magnetic force which interrupted with his compass. Later, tests revealed this was not the case however the island kept its name.

Magnetic Island is rich in flora and fauna with wallabies, possums and Northern Australia’s largest koala population calling it home
